Stuck on the Side of the Road

We woke up Saturday to find a yard covered with snow. April 19 and we have snow... who would have guessed. So that day we were to pick KK up at the airport at 12:30ish and then get to a birthday party about 75 miles north of the airport by 2:30, for a horse ride that started at 3:00. Of course, after waiting for luggage, we were able to get out of the airport by about 1:15pm... so assuming no traffic, we should be able to get there in time.

So we travel our 75 miles, and are just about to take our exit, when it starts to rain, then rain mixed with some ice, then lots of ice, to the point that we almost needed to stop, but we were at our exit, so we just exited instead.

We then had to go up a little hill on the service road that we noticed was getting covered with the ice (notice that this is April 19), but we made it up to the top where there was a stop sign with no trouble. We then proceeded to turn right, and the tires just started spinning, so we pulled off to the curb with the three other cars in front of us.

As we sat there we saw several trucks make it up ok, and several cars get about halfway up and then stop and pull over. The best was an RV that thought it could make it, so it got about halfway up, then could go no further... so it slid backwards back down the hill with two of the men who were in it pushing this RV on the ice it to keep it straight.

After about thirty minutes, the ice began to get slushy from the trucks that did make it up, so we tried and made it up the hill. And at the top of the hill, there was no ice. Had we gotten there about 5 minutes sooner, we would have just cruised right up. The people who were waiting on us at the party could not understand why we couldn't get up a hill that they had all just made it up in dry conditions. At least when we got there, we had about 2 inches of ice on the hood of the car as proof that something freakish had just happened to us.

But the good news is, the horse ride waited for us... so Sam got to ride on Blue.
